Language points
1. Have you noticed the "Tour" icon at the top of the page?
at the top of... 在……的頂部
e.g. 山上有座塔。

3. Wall Street, the world-famous trade centre, is here at the southern end of Manhattan Island.
(1) world-famous 世界著名的，舉世聞名的
e.g. 姚明是世界著名的籃球運動員。
Yao Ming is a world-famous basketball player.
(2) at the southern end of ... 在……的南端
south (n.)+ern = southern (adj.)
以此類推：north+ern=northern
west+ern=western
east+ern=eastern
at the end of ... 在……的盡頭，末尾；后接時間、地點名詞。
e.g. 這個月末 at the end of this month
在路的盡頭 at the end of the road
4. Further on is Times Square.
further on 更進一步，再向前
e.g. 再向前一英里 a mile further on
further是far的比較級，除了表示“更遠”以外，還可以表示“進一步”。
e.g. 深造 further study

(1) gather vi. 聚集
e.g. 醫(yī)院門口聚集了很多人。
A lot of people gathered at the gate of the hospital.
(2) on New Year's Eve 在新年前夕
e.g. 在平安夜 on Christmas Eve
6. It's exciting to see the huge glass ball falling through the darkness.
(1) It's exciting to see ... 看到……很激動
It's + adj. + to do sth. 做某事怎么樣
e.g. 對我來說按時完成這么多的工作很困難。
It's difficult for me to finish so much work on time.
(2) see sb. doing 看見某人正在做某事
e.g. 我剛才看見很多孩子在操場上打籃球。
I saw many children playing basketball on the playground just now.
感官動詞
see, watch, observe, notice, look at, hear, listen to, smell, taste, feel + do 表示動作的完整性，真實性；
+ doing 表示動作的連續(xù)性，進行性。
e.g.
I saw him work in the garden yesterday.
昨天我看見他在花園里干活了。（強調(diào)“我看見了”這個事實）
I saw him working in the garden yesterday.
（強調(diào)“我見他正干活”這個動作）昨天我見他正在花園里干活。
(3) through the darkness 穿過黑暗
through意為“穿過”，通常指從物體或事物的“內(nèi)部”穿過。
e.g. 穿過隧道 through the tunnel
穿過雨林 through the rainforest
7. ... it's a good place to relax after a hard day's work.
a hard day's work 一天的辛苦工作
hard的用法：
用作形容詞（adj.）
（1）表示“硬的”，例如：
The ground is as hard as stone after the long drought.
長期干旱之后，土地硬得就像石頭一樣。
（2）表示“困難的，艱難的”，例如：
It's very hard to work out this maths problem.
算出這道數(shù)學(xué)題非常困難。
用作副詞（adv.）
（1）表示“努力地，勤奮地”，例如：
Most importantly, you must work hard to catch up.
最為重要的是，你必須努力學(xué)習(xí)，迎頭趕上。
（2）表示“強烈地”，例如：
The wind is blowing hard outside.
外面風(fēng)正呼呼地刮。
8. It has been famous for its theatres since the early twentieth century.
(1) be famous for 因……而著名
e.g. 蘇州因為它的園林而聞名。
Suzhou is famous for its gardens.
<辨析>與be famous as的區(qū)別
be famous as 作為……而著名
(2) since 自從……
Ⅰ．since+過去一個時間點
e.g. I have been here since 1989.
自從1989年以來我就在這里了。
Ⅱ．since+一段時間+ago
e.g. I have been here since five months ago.
我五個月前就在這里了。
Ⅲ．since+從句
e.g. Great changes have taken place since you left.
自你離開后這里發(fā)生了巨大的變化。
Ⅳ．It is+一段時間+since從句
e.g. It is two years since I became a middle school student.
我成為一名中學(xué)生已經(jīng)快兩年了。

hear of 聽說，得知。如：
